More Info on this Athlete: Franz Diener (born June 2, 1901 in Bibra and died April 21, 1969 in Berlin) was a German heavyweight boxer. Diener's most important boxing matches, including in the Berlin Sportpalast and Madison Square Garden, took place in the second half of the 20s of the 20th century. His coach was Sabri Mahir. He became German heavyweight champion in 1926 by beating Paul Samson-Körner on points over 15 rounds; he was stripped of this title. In 1927 he was able to win the title again in the fight over 15 rounds against Rudi Wagener, which he also won on points. On April 4, 1928, Diener lost the championship title to Max Schmeling by defeat on points. Diener's nickname "The German Oak" became a colloquial term.
