The tiles are then fired in a kiln at high temperatures which fuses the color on to the back of the 4 mm thick glass tile. This process enhances the rich color. The high firing is what gives this tile it's exterior and interior surface rating. The kiln firing also produces wonderful smooth rounded edges on the tile. The clear, glossy surface of the tiles polish up like a dream after grouting. The paper like backing is actually a kiln fired covering to protect the china colorant.
