Description: This Modern Library book, #8.1, is Mademoiselle Fifi and Twelve Other Stories. From the front flap of a 1919 jacket: "In this volume of stories by Maupassant, great care has been exercise to make the selection thoroughly representative. Maupassant, who still stands unchallenged in the world's literature as the supreme master of the short story, was a versatile writer. He not only reproduced life with rate fidelity and in a pure artistic form, but his range of observation was wide and covered many phases of life. In assembling these stories the aim has been to present the best specimens from every genre to give the art of Maupassant complete in the brief compass of a single book." 251 pagesThe book has a Toledano 1 cover and A or marbled endpapers. Opposite the title page is Catalog 1 in the series listing the first twelve titles issued in the series in May 1917. These pointers indicate a 1st printing of one of the first twelve titles simultaneously issued in May 1917. Only available from 1917 to 1932, it was only issued in flexi format. The used book has bright gilt, light edgewear, a top edge with the original stain not bad, some soil on the fore and bottom edges. Fanning the pages, I noted no underlining or marginalia, no offensive odor and the binding (sewn, not glued) has no separation. See photosAs of this offering, there are several jacketless copies on ABE that appear to be legitimate 1st ML editions with what appear to be 1st printing ML covers, ranging in price from $88.75 to $378.00. My copy appears to be in better condition. On eBay, there is only one copy that is a 1st and is offered for $45.00, but half the catalog page is torn off and it has more edgewear (search: "Modern Library" "Mademoiselle Fifi").
