The Bf 109E, which entered production in late 1938, featured the Daimler-Benz DB 601A engine, providing more power. The design of the nose-mounted radiator was enlarged and the main radiators were moved to the undersides of the wings. This resulted in a significant redesign and reinforcement of the wings. Although the new radiator position improved cooling, it also led to vulnerability to damage and potential clogging on wet airfields due to the lowered undercarriage. Test flights of prototypes V14 and V15 with the new engine and different armament configurations led to the decision to order a pre-production batch of 10 E-0 models, with further variants E-1 and E-3 being evaluated in Spain and seeing combat during the final phases of the Spanish Civil War. Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 During Battle of Britain (August-October 1940) Bf 109E-4 fighters entered service. The E-4 had a modified 20 mm MG-FF/M wing cannon and improved head armor for the pilot. It could fire a new explosive shell called Minengeschoß, made of drawn steel, and featured a redesigned cockpit canopy for better visibility. Some E-4 models had a further improved high-altitude engine and were also available as fighter bombers. A total of 561 E-4 versions were built. Gruppenkommandeur Hptm. Hans von Hahn Hans von Hahn was a German Luftwaffe ace during World War II, credited with 34 aerial victories. He received the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross for exceptional battlefield bravery. Von Hahn was born on August 7, 1914, in Frankfurt am Main. He started his military career in 1934 as a sea cadet in the Navy and transferred to the Luftwaffe in 1935. Operating on both the Western and Eastern fronts, he was appointed to various command positions. Von Hahn survived the war and passed away on November 5, 1957, in Frankfurt am Main.
