The original banner of St Cuthbert, the patron saint of Northumberland, was often carried into battle, but was burned during attempts to stamp out strong Catholic identity in the area. But after piecing together its details from records, the Northumbrian Association have recreated the symbolic banner, which dates back to the 16th Century, in a bid to celebrate the region’s heritage.
