In November 1963, President John F. Kennedy, a charismatic and popular president from Massachusetts, the youngest President the country had ever elected, was touring Dallas in a motorcade. With the First Lady next to him in the back seat of an open-air convertible, President Kennedy was shot by an assassin and died that day. The horrific shooting shook the nation deeply, in part because it was caught on film at a time when cell phones only a few people in a crowd might have a movie camera. And cell phones didn't exist. This American moment in history is now known as 'The day America lost its Innocence.' Just 5 months afterward, the Kennedy half dollar quickly went into circulation. The first day banks distributed them, there were widespread reports that people had lined up for blocks before the bank doors even opened. By the end of that day, widespread reports were that all banks ran out of the new half dollars by noon. The Historic Bicentennial Kennedys are always collectible. They marked America's 200th birthday. And in 3 short years, when these bicentennial halves are 50 years old, America will mark its 250th birthday. Kennedy Bicentennials always attract a premium because of their 2-year-only custom designs and the landmark, 1776 - 1976 dual date. These halves are one of only three bicentennial coins produced - joined by the Washington quarters and Eisenhower dollar coins. They are the only coins in American history with a dual date to have been placed in general circulation - as if they were an ordinary coin. They are anything but. The bicentennials were produced & circulated in the years 1975 and 1976, using the same dual date on them all, 1776 - 1976. Because of their unchanged date for two years, there are no circulating quarters, halves or dollar coins dated 1975. All three bicentennial coins also have custom designs. On the Kennedys, the usual image of a heraldic eagle on the reverse is replaced with the image of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Kennedy bicentennial is a landmark coin in the Kennedy half dollar series. It is forever collectible at a premium because it is both history made and history kept.
