Devotional sermons by Richard Sibbes (1577-1635), Anglican theologian, Biblical scholar and church lecturer in Cambridge and preacher at Grays Inn, London. Sibbes was a Puritan who remained within the Church of England and accepted the Book of Common Prayer. The book is dedicated to Horace Vere, 1st Baron Vere of Tilbury (1565-1635), who had a distinguished military career fighting for the Dutch against the Spanish from 1590-1605 and later served the Protestant cause in the Electoral Palatinate and again in the Netherlands, 1624-32. The book's title is based on a quotation from Isaiah, 42: 13, interpreted in Matthew, 12: 20. Sibbes influenced later theologians; this title, first published in 1630, had appeared in six editions by 1638, and was later reissued in the early nineteenth century, with numerous modern versions. Scarce early edition. (ESTC S100509). THEOLOGY/HISTORY SERMONS THEOLOGY- CHURCH CHRISTIAN 17TH CENTURY THEOLOGY/HISTORY
