Description: This 16th century Italian bust has undergone a long and arduous journey to end up at an antique dealer in California where I acquired it more than twenty years ago. It is believed that the full statue from which came this bust was presumably made during the Italian Renaissance period either in Venice or Florence in the mid to late 16th century. In the mid 18th century it was brought to Yuan Ming Yuan, the royal gardens of the Qing Dynasty which ruled China from 1644 to 1911. Also called the Garden of Perfect Splendor featuring a combination of Eastern and Western aesthetic, the first of its kind in the then fiercely ethnocentric China. This bust returned to Europe in the late 18th century, presumably taken by a British or French soldier among those that burned and looted Yuan Ming Yuan in the 1860’s as the last of the great Chinese dynasties fell to the onslaught of Western Imperialism. This very heavy marble bust has been installed on a sturdy ebony wood base on which it can easily pivot to display the beautiful hand carved graceful sides which ever you choose to look at.
