Description: Custom built model of a WW2 British Fairey Swordfish torpedo bomber plane. The Royal Navy's FleetAir Arm employed these relatively ancient biplanes on its aircraft carriers throughout the war. Nicknamed "Stringbag" for its ungainly appearance and many exposed wires, the two wing design provided the necessary lift to carry a heavy torpedo into combat. It was very successful and Swordfish participated in many famous actions, It was a Swordfish which dropped the torpedo that disabled the battleship Bismark in 1940 which led to its detruction on its first sea deployment. Also a night raid by Swordfish decimated the Italian fleet at harbor in Taranto, shifting the balance of sea power in the Mediterranean sea overnight. In the final year of WW2 with most of the enemy surface fleet no longer a threat, Some Swordfidh were converted into anti-submarine aircraft. With torpedoes removed and replaced by a large radar dome and carrying depth charges and bombs these planes made lonely, over water patrols at night, and were credited wiith sinking several enemy U-Boats. This is a scale model collectors item to be handled and unpacked with care, not a childs toy to be played with! Has small, and sharp parts that could break off if mishandled. Buyer should expect the possibility of small parts coming detached in shipment but model is well built and will be carefully packed (check my feedback) and damage is quite unlikely. I combine shipping. See my other auctions. Made and assembled in the U.S.A. Happy Bidding!
