With frontispiece. Better known as Night-Thoughts, the blank verse poem is ostensibly presented over a series of nine nights, corresponding to the nine parts of the poem. Inspired by the successive deaths of his stepdaughter, her husband, and then Young's own wife, the dramatic monologue laments human frailties and describes the Young's musings over death. The adage, 'procrastination is the thief of time' originates from Young's poem in a passage which discusses how quickly opportunities can slip away. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown, 'A. G. 1755'. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown. From the library of David Stather, a Yorkshire based lawyer and book collector who rescued many interesting books from a frail state. No author given. With eight pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. CONDITION In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, very smart. Lightly rubbed to the spine, with a little loss of calf to the head of the spine. The calf is only just beginning to crack at the front joint. With some light bumping to the extremities. The front and rear hinges are starting, but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just the odd spot.
