Description: I have here for sale a 2-book set entitled TRAVELS OF THE JESUITS INTO VARIOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD. Compiled from their Letters now first attempted in English intermix'd with an Account of the Manners, Government, Religion, etc of the Several Nations visited by those Fathers with Extracts from other Travellers and miscellaneous Notes, by Mr Lockman. Both Volumes I and II are for sale here. 29 accounts in Vol I and 27 in Vol II covering such diverse places as India, Cochin-China, Peru, Cape Verde, Ethiopia, California, China, Japan, Philippines, etc. Map at the start of Vol I showing the coasts of Malabar and Cormandel; and a second map at page 394 showing California not as an island. 4 plates in Vol II, one of which is a map. Vol I is a first edition published by John Noon, London in 1743 and Vol II is a second edition, published by T Piety, in 1762. Translation, abridged, of the first ten volumes of the Jesuit Lettres Edifiantes. "A work so entertaining and curious, that it has been translated into most of the languages of Europe." (Sabin) Contains the first full English edition of Picolo's Informe, considered the first printed account of California, along with Kino's map of the missions of Baja/Sonora/ Arizona and New Mexico, very nicely engraved. The American sections comprise: Letter from Fr. Arlet concerning a new mission in Peru, particulars of the Moxos Indians, their manners and customs; letter from Fr. Le Gobien to the Jesuit fathers in France, giving them an account of California and of the work of Frs. Kino, Gogni, Salvatierra, and Picolo, in which he says:"As the account given of California is the newest and most curious part of this collection, in order that the public might not be ignorant of what we have been able to learn hitherto, concerning a country, of which no history that I know of, has yet been writ; I thought proper to add a succinct relation of the attempts which have been made, from time to time, to enter that vast country; and the manner how our missionaries discovered very lately, that California joins to the continent of America; and is not an island, as our modern geographers had always imagined." Vol I is bound in full leather with a gilt border. 5 raised bands and a gilt J to the spine. Tears to the leather on both boards and the leather is lifting to the bottom half of the front joint. Corners worn. Spine chipped to head and tail. Front board loose. Stain to bottom right hand corner of title page. Large tear to the map. Pages clean and firm. xxii, (6), 487 pages, Errata. This volume includes the landmark KINO MAP showing that California is not an island - it is entitled 'Passage by land to California discovered by Father Eusebius Francis Kino a Jesuit, between the years 1698 and 1702 containing likewise the New Missions of the Jesuits' Vol II has been rebound in half dark brown calf leather on orange and blue marbled hardboards. 5 raised bands with gilt lettering to the spine. Covered also by a mylar protective jacket. New endpapers. Clean and tight pages. Title, 4, (4), 507 pages + 24 page article on the Spanish Dominions in America; finishing off with 18 pages of the Index ending on Travancor so presumably two pages missing here. Both volumes 21 cm x 14 cm.
