Jonathan Edwards (the younger) (1745-1801) was an American theological and linguist. As a theologian, his fame rest upon his reply to Charles Chauncey upon the salvation of all men, in which he defended the orthodox evangelical doctrine. A great deal of religious controversy raged in New England during his lifetime. He supported abolition of the slave trade and of slavery, unlike his slave owning father. He wrote “Some Observations upon the Slavery of Negroes” in the Connecticut Journal.. it was this work along with his other sermons that were among the first, along with Samuel Hopkins’ writings, to question the freedoms of slaves in the New England ministry.
