In company with Samuel Johnson and others he started a periodical called The Adventurer, which ran to 140 numbers, of which 70 were from the pen of Hawkesworth himself. The Guardian was a short-lived newspaper published in London from 12 March to 1 October 1713. It was founded by Sir Richard Steele (bap. 1672 – 1729) who was an Irish writer and politician. It featured contributions from Joseph Addison, Thomas Tickell and Ambrose Philips. Steele and Addison had previously collaborated on the Tatler and The Spectator (not related to the present-day Spectator). This volume contains Numbers I-CXI (Tuesday 7th November 1752 - Saturday 9th March 1754) of The Adventurer and Numbers I-CLXXVI (Thursday 12th March - Tuesday 1st October 1713) of The Guardian. This is therefore the entire run of all issues ever published CONDITION Bound in calf with gilt detail to the spine. The binding is generally firm but the text block has split in one place exposing the chords. There is some significant wear to the extremities including a significant areas of loss, a split to the spine and absence of the spine label. The inner hinges are strained. Internally the pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot and some staining. There are ink inscriptions to the front free end paper and the title page. There is a 0.5" chip to the top of a couple of pages.
