This newspaper ran from Jan. 31 1754 through Sept. 30 1756 and included a total of 140 issues (numbers). According to Wikipedia, "the newspaper was "founded and chiefly run by George Colman the Elder and the parodist Bonnell Thornton as a 'plebeian' counterpart to Edward Moore's The World, a periodical of about the same time, which dealt more with the interests of aristocrats." The four volume set for sale here includes the complete run of 140 numbers of the Connoisseur.Condition: The bind is intact and sound for all volumes, however each volume shows some weakness on the outside of the cover/spine hinge (see photo for example). All show light rubbing and wear to the covers. There is some gilt loss on the spines. A former owner's name is written on the top of each Title Page. The interiors are clean and crisp. A few pages have bumped/turned corners. The pages are age-toned. The Table of Contents for Volume III is bound in the back, rather than at the front. On old bookseller price stamp is on the last rear-facing end paper of Volume I. Overall a really great 227-year-old set.
