Description: BROWNING TO THE EDGES OF THE 17" X 23" PAPER. Paper toning and soiling consistent with age. THE PAPER IS L. WHATMAN 1794. BOTH ENGRAVINGS HAVE LINEN TAPE ON THE LEFT EDGE WHERE THEY WERE TIPPED INTO A PORTFOLIO William Hogarth died in 1764 and these were printed in 1798. The two prints are intended to show the subjects BEFORE and AFTER sexual intercourse. The original engravings were completed in 1736. These two were done in 1798. "Before" was engraved by T. Cook and published by G.G & J. Robinson on October 1, 1798"After" was engraved by T. Cook and published by G.G & J. Robinson on February 1, 1798 "Before" is watermarked with "1794 J Whatman" (PHOTO 6). I did not find the Whatman watermark on "After" though it is watermarked with a "17" at the top of the right margin within the printed area and "95" at the lower right margin (PHOTO 10). It can therefore be assumed that one sheet was made in 1794 and the other sheet in 1795. J. Whatman paper is considered by many to be the best paper ever made with comparisons to Rolls Royce and Faberge.. CONDITION As is clearly evident, the paper has significant browning to the edges where the paper was exposed to air. There are a significant number of handling creases and "before" has a large angled heavier crease on the left side (PHOTO 9). There is paper toning throughout. There is light foxing to the rear of the Whatman "Before" engraving and more significant foxing to the "After", so I guess the Whatman paper really was better.
