Description: BROWNING & MINOR WEAR TO THE EDGES & SMALL TEARS AND CHIPS OF THE BROWNED EDGES OF THE 18.75" X 23" PAPER. THERE ARE HANDLING CREASES. EDGES HAVE SMALL CHIPS IN THE BROWNED EDGES. THERE ARE TWO HORIZONTAL CURVED CREASES BETWEEN THE PLATE LINES, ONE WHICH RUNS THROUGH EACH IMAGE. - The browning and foxing are quite visible on the edges, with the fourth edge having an additional piece of paper attached to make this sheet the same size as the other portfolio sheets. Minimal light soiling and spotting does enter the plate area. The overall plate area is 10" x 16.5". The image of CARICATURAS & CHARACTERS is approximately 7.5" wide by 7.75" tall. This does not include any text or the plate marks, just the image itself. The image of TO NATURE AND YOUR SELF APPEAL is 7 inches wide by 8 inches tall. Each of the images in the plate has a curved crease best seen in (PHOTO 7, 8, 9 & 10) , the rear image of the paper & close-ups of the creases themselves. While each is visible in the front photos, if you chose to mount and frame, the creases could be properly attended to. There are additional handling creases. The CARICATURAS CHARACTERS image has had the large crease mostly smoothed and mounting would be relatively east. It does not appear that TO NATURE AND YOUR SELF APPEAL was ever flattened out and it might take a bit more work. While framing one or both would require cutting up the paper, that is what art is for; to be displayed. 1- CARICATURAS & CHARACTERS- A panel at the bottom establishes a basic dichotomy: three heads after Raphael, representing an acceptable physiognomic range for character, are contrasted with a row of repellent caricatures derived from Ghezzi, Carracci, and Leonardo. Above, further examples of character are provided by a cloudlike arrangement of profiled male heads in a tiered format resembling caricature drawings by Annibale Carracci. Hogarth's image proved influential in an ironic sense. Rather than dissuading British artists from using caricature, it demonstrated how the genre might be employed with greater subtlety. When later masters such as Rowlandson and Gillray mixed caricature with satire, they generally worked in a range that Hogarth would have called character. 2- To NATURE and your SELF APPEAL: Also known as TIME SMOKING A PICTURE: English painter, printmaker, pictorial satiriSaint 'To Nature and your Self appeal,Nor learn of others, what to feel”. The Grim Reaper or Father Time Smoking a Picture (As Statues moulder into Worth). Saturn as winged death heartily smoking at a painting to give it the major orders, cutting it with his scythe at the same time. If framed, the print will likely have to be mounted in order to remove crease lines. Alternatively it can be made wet and pressed to remove the majority of any signs of creasing. =================================================================================================== The 18.75" x 23" paper leaves wide margins that would likely be trimmed if framed, unless you like very large mats. T William Hogarth died in 1764 and this was printed in 1802. This was engraved by Thomas Cook, who always engraved to the same dimensions as Hogarth's original work. From what I have read, he was the only engraver to do so. This was published by G. & I Robinsons Paternoster Row December 1, 1802 Many sellers would trim the edges of the paper to eliminate the brown edges and chipping. I do not. You can trim or mat out the browning. PLEASE USE ZOOM FUNCTION ON ALL PHOTOS.These will be shipped rolled ff6
