Description: I have here for sale a RARE book entitled A NEW HISTORICAL AND COMMERCIAL SYSTEM OF GEOGRAPHY: containing a Comprehensive History and Description of the Present State of All the Kingdoms of the World; including the Most Recent Discoveries of the Latest Voyages and Travellers, the whole forming a Complete Guide to Geography, Astronomy, the Use of the Globes, Maps, etc to which are added A New and Copious Geographical Index, with the Names and Places Alphabetically Arranged; and a Genealogical Table of all the Sovereigns of the World. Printed and published in 1803 by S Russell, Manchester. The book contains the maps of North America and of Asia, also a plate showing the North Gate of Peking, and two plates showing Captain Cook, Stockholm, Rome, Florence. A There are 15 world maps (the World Hemispheres, Europe, Northern Europe, Scotland, England and Wales, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Asia, Africa, North America, West Indies, South America) and 15 b/w engraved plates. The CORRECT MAP OF NORTH AMERICA is an uncommon map. It stretches from Georgia to Maine (Sagadahok) and is based on Robert de Vaugondy's Partie de l'Amérique Septentrionale, qui Comprend le Cours de l'Ohio, la Nlle. Angleterre, la Nlle York, le New Jersey, la Pensylvanie, le Maryland, la Virginie, la Caroline. The Carolinas and Virginia extend to the Mississippi River. Pennsylvania is enlarged and shown taking in part of New York, which in turn encompasses all of New Jersey. New England consists of only Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Lakes Huron, Ontario, and Erie appear in a largely accurate configuration. A large inset entitled "Supplement to Carolina" features the remainder of South Carolina and parts of Georgia. Filled with Indian names. Given that the map's source was 45 years old at the time of publication, this map is strangely out-of-date. Engraved by Holborn. Bound in full leather which is quite worn with tears. Both boards are detached and the binding block is split into many parts, so effectively disbound, although the boards are still present. Spine covering is mostly missing. It could benefit from being completely resewn and rebound. Pages generally clean but title and frontispiece pages are stained. Condition: poor/fair. 693 pages + index. 40 x 25 cm.
