Description: Sir Walter Scott followed up his ballad expeditions of the 1790s with this shorter book of works. According to the “advertisement”, “these ballads have been already published in different collections”, including Scott’s more famous, “Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border”, a collection which was reprinted multiple times and made the reputation of its printer, James Ballantyne. Included are notes and short essays on the background of the various pieces. Includes ‘Thomas the Rhymer’, ‘The Gray Brother’, ‘The Erl King’ and others. The block of this volume is good but the front board has been replaced and is off. There is some spotting inside and evidence of handling. Corners are frayed and exposed. Faded writing on the half-title: illegible for the most part but indicate a parting gift to Emma ?
