Description: WAVERLEY, OR SIXTY YEARS SINCE Sir Walter Scott's famous work, considered the first historical novel, which spawned a long and hugely successful series of books by the Scottish author. The book was first published anonymously in Edinburgh in 1814 in three volumes. The American first edition, also printed without the author's name, appeared the next year in a two-volume edition, published by Van Winkle and Wiley, New York. The book for sale is volume two of this extremely rare first American edition. Long ago this book was held by the Fallsington, PA, public library, and there is a label on the spine and a bookplate inside the front cover, no other marks. The original leather covers are somewhat warped and show wear commensurate with the years. The hinges are tender. The text is mostly still firmly bound; one signature is starting to loosen. The text shows its age, with foxing, some water spots, corner creases, and a couple tears. Not ideal, but still a presentable copy of a collector's item which is almost impossible to find in any condition. Currently there is just one complete set (not in its original binding) for sale online, listing for $3,000.00. 4.25" X 6.75", 243 pages. Ships promptly & securely.
