Description: SPLENDID EARLY MANUSCRIPTTHOMAS CLARKEXETER EXCHANGELORD MAYOR LONDONCHRISTOPHER MAGNAYLetter of AttorneyWill/Legal/LandLondon/America1822 An extremely attractive and lengthy manuscript, five pages in booklet form, lovely penmanship and execution, old laid paper has the noted Britannia watermark. The beauty of this printed and mostly handwritten document is due to the fact that Thomas Clark was a very wealthy man. Clark ran successful businesses, including the Exeter Exchange (also known as Exeter Change, in the Strand, famous for the "exotic" menagerie on its top floors), in London but also - it seems based on this document - had land in America. This document was deaccessioned from the Bennington Museum and so some of his American holdings may well have been in Vermont, or nearby New York, or both. Clark's fortune was reported as being £300,000 which in today's equivalent would come in above 21 million pounds, a great fortune (no wonder the King knew Clark and gave him special privileges). Signed by the Lord Mayor of London and others. Names of sons and others here include Thomas Clark, Thomas Hamlet, Thomas Clark Smart, James Thomas, Christopher Magnay, &c. One-of-a-kind. Please see the photographs. Some wear and tear along edges, mostly quite clean and bright. A lovely historic document. ******We ship with safety in mind. Thank you.
