This was the author's first published volume of poetry, published the same year that he graduated from Yale. 'Fugitive Poetry', an uncommon work, published in 1829. Willis was a notable American author of the nineteenth century, writing both prose and poetry. He also worked as an editor, working with various eminent American figures of the day, including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. During his career, he was the highest paid magazine writer. This copy was formerly held in the Yale University Library, from the Samuel Rossiter Betts Collection of Yale Poetry. CONDITION In the original cloth binding, in a custom cloth chemise, and quarter morocco slipcase with cloth to the boards. Externally, a little worn, with loss of cloth to the spine and boards. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. A few minor marks to the boards. Front board is held by one cord only. Rear hinge is strained. Library label and stamp to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean. Cloth to the chemise is a little cockled, with a small tear to the rear board. Leather to the slipcase is a little rubbed, with minor wear to the extremities. Chemise and slipcase in a very good condition.
