This original newspaper contains an inside page, full column of text describing the visit of President ANDREW JACKSON to New Hampshire (Concord and Nashua, NH) at the end of a tour of New England. In 1833 President Andrew Jackson made a tour of New England, a part of the country that had not been inclined to look upon him with favor.JACKSON DEFEATED JOHN Quincy Adams in the 1828 presidential election, carrying the South and doing better than expected in Adams’s New England with the support of prominent New Hampshirites such as former governor Levi Woodbury and newspaper publisher and future governor Isaac Hill. The town of Adams, New Hampshire–which had named itself for his vanquished opponent’s father, John Adams, when he was elected the second President of the United States in 1796–changed its name to Jackson in 1828, and has managed to keep it the same through subsequent presidential elections to this day.Poor health and constant pain took its toll on President Jackson near the planned apogee of his tour of the Northeastern United States, forcing him to cancel a visit to Portland, Maine, and turn around for Washington after reaching Concord. The pain was no wonder: Jackson fought so many duels in his younger years–mainly over the honor of his wife–that one wag said that he rattled like a bag of marbles from all the lead in his body. Very good condition. This listing includes the complete entire original newspaper, NOT just a clipping or a page of it. STEPHEN A.
