Bound by Shaw with binders label to the rear pastedowns. Irving was an American short story writer, historian, biographer and diplomat of the early 19th century and was admired by many British writers such as Charles Dickens and Mary Shelly. This work includes some of his best known works, such as the 'life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus' and 'The Sketch book'. CONDITION In half morocco with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the joints, spine, extremities and paper boards and minor loss to the leather to the head of the spine for 'vol 1'. The top of the front joint to 'vol 1' is starting but firm. Front hinge failed to 'Vol 2'. Binders label to the rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound with generally bright pages with with the odd spot heavier to the first and last few pages. Tide marks to extremities, heavier to the fronts. Small closed tear to the half title of 'Vol 2'. Top edges age toned.
