These fine orginally hand colored prints depict turtles, snakes, fishes, reptiles, amphibians, and other animals in rich detail & color.Bernard Germain Eteinne de la Ville was born in France in 1756. Early in his education he came in contact with Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, and decided to concentrate his study in the field of natural history. He was also a skilled musician, proficient with several instruments, composing two operas that earned him praise from Gluck. In his mid-twenties he published two treaties of natural history, which caught the attention of Buffon, who proposed that the Count continue the Histoire Naturelle. Bernard responded with the works Histoire des quadrupdes ovipares el des serpents (2 vols., 1788-1789) and Histoire naturelle des reptiles (1789). Later in life Bernard was active in politics, serving as a senator, a minister of state, and a peer of France. A collection of his natural history works was published posthumously after his death in 1825.About Antique Prints We try to select antique prints in the best possible condition, with as few defects as possible. Nevertheless, these prints are often hundreds of years old and show the effects of time, as noted below1. Most common is paper darkening, or toning, resulting in the paper becoming shades darker, from off white to light brown. We rarely offer very toned prints, unless the issue is particularly scarce.2. Text offset occurs over time, when the text page is against the image and ink from the text makes lines of the image. Conversely, image offset occurs when the hand coloring transfers slightly to the text. Again, we rarely offer heavily offset prints.3. Spotted or foxing is also common due to age and handling over a long period of time and while a small degree of foxing is common and acceptable, we avoid extensively foxed prints. SHIPPINGShipping is first class and we pack the prints flat and well protected in foam core, unless they are large, when we very carefully roll them with several protective layers. They roll out flat very quickly.
