Description: VR-440 - 1837 Victoria Regina "To Hanover" Token (a.k.a. Cumberland Jack) Originally from the collection of Benjamin Fauver. Notes on Fauver's holder/paper envelope read in part: To Han, HANOVER, 405, VR-440, Kpa(R) Brief history of To Hanover tokens: As described in an article by Frank G. Holstine for the February 1968 TAMS Journal:“The Kings of England, starting with George I, were also Duke or King of Hanover and Elector in the Holy Roman Empire. When Victoria became Queen in 1837, the German law did not permit a woman on the throne of Hanover. Her uncle, Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and fifth son of George III, became King of Hanover. This is known as Salic Law...The To Hanover Tokens are said to represent the Duke of Cumberland departing from England on horseback, riding over a one, two or three headed dragon. The inscription ‘To Hanover’ appears above and the coronation date. The tokens were “... hoarded by people of moderate means in the hope that they would become valuable in the future. Nobility collected rare regal coins while the poor people were able to collect only the tokens sold by the street-sellers at a cost of a penny for four.” We will combine shipping on token orders to help our buyers build a collection. After purchase, request an invoice PRIOR to payment so that we can issue you a new invoice with combined shipping. We are not afraid to leave original markings unhidden on these token cases (including price markings), as many of our current token offerings have not seen the light of day since the 60s or 70s, and a good portion were obtained from collections of life long exonumia fanatics with a keen eye for quality and desirability. This is a vintage item. Please see all pictures as the primary indicator of condition, details, and flaws. As is typical of older items, there may be markings, tears, loose binding, soiling, foxing, fragile areas, rust, fading and any other type of defect common with items of this age. We do our best to mention and picture any major flaws. Most of our photographs are taken with high quality equipment and lighting, enabling users to zoom in to see a great level of detail. We encourage all buyers and bidders to examine all photographs prior to purchase.
