Description: Welcome to my listing for:1843 Jabez Knowlton* Newburgh, ME Town Check / Draft to Daniel Jenksen ? No. 461 In 1839, Jabez Knowlton established a general store - known as "The Knowlton Store" in Newburgh, ME that operated by Jabez's son, Amos W. Knowlton (1845 - 1933) whom took over the store upon his father's death in 1895 and ran it up until about 1920. (See last photo for Amos's obituary) In 1957, at age 24, Amos Kimball, a relative (his mother was a Knowlton) Began a restoration of the store as a private museum, to bring it back to how it appeared, both inside and out, when it closed in 1921. The museum / store has been open for decades and still may be available to visit today by appointment. In 1978, "The Knowlton Store" was placed on National Register of Historic Places. Jabez also served as newburgh's Postmaster and Selectman for 40 years and as Treasurer for 37 years. This draft is related to these positions for the town. This was part of a large collection of letterheads, covers and other paper items where the cover's contents were as found - folded for posting, possibly for decades, if not for 50-100 years and leaving the well protected sheets clean, with crisp edges, only minor signs of wear or handling. All have expected fold creases from posting. General condition issues are noted below:Showing slight signs of wear and handling consistent with its age. May have small tears, cuts, fold-overs or paper loss. Overall, in good to very good condition. Will display well in your collection. You will receive the exact sheet shown in the photos. The draft measures approx. 2 3/8" x 5"**Shipped securely in poly bag, sandwiched in cardboard inside a rigid mailer via USPS Ground Advantage service w/ tracking** Click HERE to see other "Knowlton" related items that I have available here on eBay.
