Rear board attached by cording only, fragile. Leather is beginning to wear and peel away at edges and corners, exposing boards. Leather spine, except for title label, completely lacking - binding exposed. Gilt lettering on label bright and clean. Previous ownership plate on front fly-leaf: Maurice Robert des Marais. Repair tape to gutter of front fly-leaf and title page. Light toning and foxing throughout text-block. Some instances of exposed cording throughout text-block. Binding attached, but very fragile. Please see photos. John Gummere (1784-1845) was an American astronomer and one of the founders of Haverford College in Pennsylvania. In 1814, Gummere was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society. Gummere built the first observatory around 1834 at Haverford College, commemorated by a plaque at the College, after the Strawbridge Observatory was erected in 1850.
