Description: This listing is for an 1847 Braided Hair Large Cent PCGS VF Details Cleaned N-36 FS-301 R.5 Large Cent. Any damage from the cleaning is minimal and the notation is purely technical. This very respectable example is a very original brown color with no obvious signs of the cleaning. Listed in the Cherry Picker guide as a "date orientation" variety this scarce die paring is distinguishable by the relation of the hair curl to the 8 in the date as an easy "first glance" diagnostic. Date placement alone does not make this a rare variety, but rather the fact the the Newcomb-36 die pairing is very rare. Originally classified by Bob Grellman (a leading Large Cent Expert) as a R.6- it has since been reclassified down to a R.5. The popular variety is one that is very scarce and with few auction appearances. Please see the pics for more details. Thanks for looking!
