Buxton to the recto to the front endpaper of Volume I, and to the reverse of the frontispiece of Volume II. Sir Edward North Buxton was conservationist and Liberal Part politician. He was also the grandson of Thomas Foxell Burton, who founded the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa in 1839. Through this expedition, Buxton promoted the 1841 Niger expedition.An account of the 1841 Niger expedition, when a group of missionaries and activists took iron steam vessels to Lokoja, to try and make treaties with the native people and introduce them to Christianity.However, the crew suffered a high mortality rate from disease on the ships, resulting in the expedition being called off.This work explains the thoughts behind the expedition, and how exactly it went wrong, whilst also looking at the things the crewmates did achieve.Written by Captain William Allen, who is best known for commanding the HMS Wilberforce on this expedition.Also written by T. R. H. Thomson. CONDITION Rebound in a modern cloth binding. Externally, smart. A couple of very light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some odd spots. Pages 279 to 282 of Volume I are working loose. Tidemark to the last few plates in Volume I, and to a couple of plates in Volume II.
