Jones, Printer, No. 24 Carter's Alley. 1848. 212 pp + blank pages. Extensive notes by previous student Thomas G. Fox. Fine half-leather marbled binding, 9 x 5.5", 8vo. In fair condition. Marbled paper chipped at fore-edge of rear board. Pencil marginalia, including previous ownership signature found on front end-page & fly-leaf: "Thos. G. Fox, Nov. 2d '49." Very light tea or age stain found on title page, about center. Normal age-related toning throughout text-block, mostly to edges of leaves. Extensive student notes throughout text-block, in both ink and pencil. Note-taking is heaviest in first 100 pp of text & in 4th division (which begs the question if the student missed class/did not take notes or if the teacher skipped sections). Rear end-page and paste-down exhibit pencil marginalia. Binding intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Thomas Dent Mütter (1811 – 1859) was an American surgeon born in Richmond, Virginia. Orphaned at the age of 8 and raised by a distant relative, he attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia (1824) and graduated with an MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1831. Later he eventually took a position as an assistant to Dr. Thomas Harris at the Medical Institute of Jefferson College. At the age of 30, he became the Chair of Surgery at the Jefferson Medical College and held this position from 1841 to 1856, when he resigned because of gout and lung disease. He operated on hundreds of patients to repair deformities and became the first surgeon in 1846 to administer ether anesthesia in Philadelphia. He is best known for the "Mütter Flap" which he used in order to treat burn victims; the grafting procedure is still used today. Dr. Thomas G. Fox (1827-1914) was a Representative from Dauphin County; born, July 19, 1827 in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pa.; M.D., Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College), 1852; apprentice, printing trade (1841-1845); clerk, Philadelphia Exchange Bank (1846-1848); physician (1852-1873); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican in 1861 and 1862; elected, prothonotary, Dauphin County (1873-1879); appointed, prison inspector, Dauphin County (1883-1893); elected, delegate, Republican State Convention (1889); died, June 18, 1914 in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania; interred, Hummelstown Cemetery, Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Fox, according to his signature, used this syllabus for class at Jefferson Medical College in November 1849 (he graduated 1852). His notes are neat and extensive. Some of his notes include: "Gastrotomy. - Incision must be parallel."; "Wounds. - For definition, see Syllabus page 22. Attention should be especially directed to the division of the clarification - whether simple or complicated, for upon this, your prognosis as well as treatment will depend. Dr. Mutter gives another clarification... ....1. Wounds of great extent, tho superficial, are very dangerous - much more so than deep ones which are not extensive. 2. Wounds in tissues whose organization is below par as cartilage, bone &c, are more dangerous..."; & under "Ligature" on Page 24, Fox has written "useless." Incredibly interesting syllabus with pages of hand-written notes from Pennsylvania doctor Thomas G. Fox, while he was in medical school at the Jefferson Medical College taking a class by Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter. RAREA1848KTWB 05/24 - HK1630
