Item 489905 ◊ 1851 Reprinting of the 1850 Thanksgiving Sermon at Newbury Mass., Topic: Slavery and more Rare and fascinating "1851 Printing of the 1850 Thanksgiving Sermon at Newburyport, Mass., Topic: Slavery and more. Republished in Boston by Perkins Whipple, 1851.This intriguing booklet is printed on a light-brown paper. It was originally string bound, but the string has since disappeared. It measures approx. 7-7/8" X 4-1/2" (19 cm. X 11.5 cm,) and contains 24 pages (including the cover.) We all know that there was nothing like television in 1850. When an important or influential person made a speech, people who didn't hear it live, had to wait for printers like Perkins & Whipple to publish it and spread it around the country. This booklet is an example that that very thing. This sermon was preached by Leonard Withington, Pastor of the First Church, at Newbury. (b. 1789, d. 1885.) His Alma Mater was Yale University. We admit to not having read this booklet completely, but we have read parts. Sometimes people in modern times, do not realize that many people in 1850's were quite worldly and well educated. The news traveled more slowly in those days, but it is likely that they had heard of the works of Abe Lincoln, Fredrick Douglas, Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, Napolean Bonapart, Leo Tolstoy, Otto von Bismark, Harriett Beecher Stowe and more. These are people where shaping the world in the mid-18th century. Think of the time in which the sermon was given … approximately 11 years before the start of the civil war. Clearly the topic of slavery was already a heated issue. But many people hoped that the North and the South could solve their differences and avoid a "brother against brother" war. This is a provocative sermon, which might help you become more attuned to what people in 1850 were thinking. Condition: The corners are strong, and there is only minor damage to the edges. The corners are all a bit dog-eared. The spine has glue residue, intended to help hold the booklet together, in addition to the string, (but some of the pages are now loose.) There is no foxing, but there is a bit of soiling on the front cover. Still the printing is crisp and clean, and easy to read. Please see all of the photos above to get a good idea of the condition.Amazing and though-provoking "1850 Thanksgiving Sermon at Newburyport, Mass., Topic: Slavery," and a fantastic addition to any 17th Century historical collection!!!-------------Please check out other interesting Books and Booklets offered this week and in coming weeks by this seller on eBay.060424-Ns OUR POLICIES COMMUNICATION: We want you to be happy with your transaction, and GOOD COMMUNICATION is the key to YOUR HAPPINESS.
