1854 GATE OF CALAIS FRIAR FRANCE ENGRAVING WILLAM HOGARTH ANTIQUE BOOK PRINT ART

Description: 1854 Antique Original Steel Cut Engraving Print GATE OF CALAIS "O THE ROAST BEEF OF OLD ENGLAND" by WILLIAM HOGARTH engraved by W. Radclyffe The Gate of Calais or O, the Roast Beef of Old England is a 1748 painting by William Hogarth, reproduced as a print from an engraving the next year. Hogarth produced the painting directly after his return from France, where he had been arrested as a spy while sketching in Calais. The scene depicts a side of beef being transported from the harbour to an English tavern in the port, while a group of undernourished, ragged French soldiers and a fat friar look on hungrily. Hogarth painted himself in the left corner with a "soldier's hand upon my shoulder." Bookplate Print Measures approx. 7-3/4" x 10-1/2" - overall outside dimensions Condition: Good used condition. This volume was illustrated with high quality detailed steel engravings on lightly toned paper. The quality of the prints is hard to see in photos/scans, but the process produces brilliant sharp lines which make these prints highly desirable. He was the pre-eminent artist of his age, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian".Working almost entirely outside the academic art establishment, he revolutionized the popular art market and the role of the artist.
