These examples show the imprint of Philips, Sampson & Co. on the lower spine of each volume. A firsthand account by Dr. Kane who led the Second Grinnell expedition to the Arctic which was unsuccessful in discovering the fate of John Franklin's expedition. The trip was financed by Henry Grinell, and Kane's team would go further North than any other expeditions at the time and led to the eventual path to the North Pole taken by subsequent explorers. Condition: 8vo, 2 vols: 464 pp.; 467 pp.; additional titles with engraved vignettes, tissue guards, engraved portrait frontispieces of Kane and Grinnell, 18 engraved plates, 2 maps, one of which is folding (Chart Exhibiting the Discoveries of the Second American Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin), a folding isothermal chart of Baffin Bay, and nearly 300 woodcut engravings taken from sketches by the author in the text. Elaborate blind-stamped boards with a bright gilt stamped vignette to each cover, gilt stamped titles to the spine and colored endpapers. light edgewear with spine tips softened and frayed in spots, corners are bumped and sunning to the spines. A small 2" tear to the map in volume 1 and some creasing and a small tear to the foldout Isothermal Lists in Volume 2. Intermittent foxing throughout, a blank bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume and the pencil signature of O.H. Phillips to the front flyleaf and blank preliminary of Volume 2.
