Description: Henry W Cleaveland was an American architect based in New York who wrote this early in his career with the Backus brothers who were partners in the architectural firm. Cleaveland was a “disciple” of A.J. Dowling and, following Dowling’s example, co-authored this book with his partners. Cleaveland went on to become one of the founding members of the American Institute of Architects and later worked in California. The book is inscribed to the “Rev.Henry J Van Dyke/with the regards of his friend/Geo. N. Cleaveland.” The Reverend signed his name below this with “Brooklin/New York” below that. Opposite is the book plate of the previous owner. Inside the front is a “home made” repair of some sort of tape covering the cracked gutter. Van Dyke’s name is also written on the spare. Van Dyke was part of the famous Van Dyke family of New York and a prominent Minister whose sermons were published throughout the late 1800s.
