1856 Architecture Village and Farm Cottages Cleaveland, Backus and Backus

Description: Henry W Cleaveland was an American architect based in New York who wrote this early in his career with the Backus brothers who were partners in the architectural firm. Cleaveland was a “disciple” of A.J. Dowling and, following Dowling’s example, co-authored this book with his partners. Cleaveland went on to become one of the founding members of the American Institute of Architects and later worked in California. The book is inscribed to the “Rev.Henry J Van Dyke/with the regards of his friend/Geo. N. Cleaveland.” The Reverend signed his name below this with “Brooklin/New York” below that. Opposite is the book plate of the previous owner. Inside the front is a “home made” repair of some sort of tape covering the cracked gutter. Van Dyke’s name is also written on the spare. Van Dyke was part of the famous Van Dyke family of New York and a prominent Minister whose sermons were published throughout the late 1800s. Acceptable Condition: 8vo: embossed brown publisher’s cloth with gilt lettering: front board off but held in place by interior repair: gilt on spine, faded: embossed design on rear: rounded corners: some scuffing to the edges: bookplate inside front: writing on ffep and first spare: loose pages at front not totally away from block:foxing throughout: small vignettes at beginning of chapters, some with color added: house plans and elevations throughout: some spotting: rear hinge cracked: yellow endpapers: “Village and Farm Cottages: The Requirements of American Village Homes Considered and Suggested; with Designs for Such Houses of Moderate Cost”: by Henry W.
