The orientation of the map shows theEast River running horizontally between the east side of Manhattan and the Brooklyncoast, from Gowanus Bay at the far left to Greenpoint at the far right. The mapmarks shipyards, landings, forts, and dwellings along the coast. Textthroughout as well as at the bottom details events of the war. David Thomas Valentine (1801-1869),who served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council of New York forthirty-seven years, began publishing the Manual for the Corporation of theCity of New York in 1841. The manuals were directories of extensivehistorical and contemporary information about the City of New York, including maps,lithographs, and engravings. Size: 13.00 x 21.00 inches Condition: Good -. The map is printedon sturdy paper, lightly browned with age, except for two rectangles along theleft with varying degrees of darker browning.
