Description: Here we offer a rare relic of American history: a first edition, fourth form, of the classic, Political Debates Between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, published by Follett, Foster and Company, Columbus, for Abraham Lincoln in 1860. This very early fourth form is identified by an introductory packet of 4 pages of advertisements; the copyright, contents, and printer's card (with line) at verso of title page; and signature numbers beginning at "2" at page 13. Lincoln traveled around Illinois debating Douglas for the Illinois Senate seat in 1858, and lost. He then compiled and edited the newspaper clippings he'd saved of all those Senate debates into this book, which he shrewdly published in 1860 in the midst of his campaign for president against Stephen Douglas, and he won the campaign with help from this book.New brown spine cloth over original rippling and edgeworn floral-impressed boards, and added placeholding ribbon. Moisture staining and foxing throughout as is typical with this title. Uninscribed bookplate at front flyleaf. Preliminary pages bear repeated inscriptions from a "Kellogg." (Please see pics.) Intact original endpapers.
