Description: A pleasing cdv tintype photo from life of Commodore Foote of Union Navy Civil War fame. This photo would have been taken circa 1861-1863. Commodore Foote graduated from West Point. Early in his naval career he detained numerous slave ships. In 1861 early in the Civil War he was in charge of naval defenses on the upper Mississippi river. In 1862 he was wounded (somewhat appropriately) in the foot in the battle of Fort Donaldson. He died in 1863 shortly before he was able to take position in the blockade of Charleston. A Wikipedia & Google search will provide lots of additional information on the Commodore Foote that is shown in this photo. The matt has no backmark. The front of matt at bottom edge is printed "Com. Foote". The cdv is circa 1860's & measures 4 inches by 2 7/16 inches. The actual tintype measures 1 5/8 inches tall by 1 3/8 inches wide. The oval opening showing the tintype on the front of the matt measures 1 1/4 inches tall by 1 inch wide. The mount is complete & intact with no trim. The tintype as well as the matt are in excellent condition. The minute black spot on his upper lip was in the making. The reference number for this item is #4935.
