Due to poor communications, Columbus was attacked by Union forces on April 16, 1865, two days after Lincoln's assassination and a week after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. The Confederate defenders were overwhelmed and Columbus was put to the torch with particular attention paid to its armament related manufacturers. John D. Gray was a railroad builder and manufacturer who turned his attention to the manufacture of munitions and other military goods during the Civil War under the names of "John D.
