Description: For sale is a very cool 1862 State of Georgia $5 Note. Back in the Civil War era pretty much any bank, especially in the South, could issue their own currency. The major issue with this practice was the currency was never insured by any entity at all so if the bank went under the currency became useless, and the owner of that money would lose it. Of course that is exactly what happened, which led the U.S. Government after the Civil War to bar banks from issuing their own currency. These notes from this era are called "obsolete bank notes." This particular note was issued by the State of Georgia, and is also redeemable at the Western & Atlantic Rail Road, who probably had an investment in those banks. When you read the text on the note is mentions paying 8% interest on the note once peace is achieved in the Civil War, or when the Banks of Savannah & Augusta begin operations again. This note was issued on Jan. 15th, 1862 in Milledgeville, GA. The cool thing about the notes from this era is they are hand signed with live ink and the serial number is also written in. The back of the note is blank, which is very common with notes from this era, but it does have a bank cancellation stamp on the back, adding to the cool history of this note.As you can see from the pics this certificate is in great condition, and would be considered high grade. The tan background on both sides are very bold, as is the print and images. It has lots of crispness to it and it has no major rips, tears, stains, or folds. This is a great historic addition to any rare currency collection. Thanks!
