Description: You are bidding on a scarce antique hardcover book titled: "The History of the Violin and Other Instruments Played on with the Bow from the Remotest Times to the Present, The Also, an account of the principal makers, English and foreign, with numerous illustrations."By William Sandys and Simon Andrew Forster. Published in London by John Russell Smith, 1864. This book was published while the American Civil War was still raging! This is the scarce and collectible First Edition. Sandys, an English solicitor and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, is now best remembered for his book Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern, which marked the first publication of many now-classic English carols, including "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen" and "The First Noel" and contributed to the holiday's mid-Victorian revival. His History of the Violin, written with Simon Andrew Forster, a member of the famous Forster family of instrument makers, "is an important mid-nineteenth-century treatise," according to the ODNB, which adds: "An enthusiastic musical amateur from youth, Sandys studied the cello under Robert Lindley, thought by many to have been the greatest cellist of his day." This book covers such topics as Egyptian instruments; medieval viols, minstrels; 16th century viols & violins; restoration instruments; violoncello; 17th, 18th & 19th century performers (eg Paganini); early English makers; Stradivarius; William Foster & the Foster family; the Banks family; mid 19th century makers. The book features burgundy cloth binding with gold lettering on the spine. The covers are firmly attached with no cracking or splitting of hinges. The spine is evenly sun-faded. The pages are clean and tightly bound. Previous owner name on first blank page. Book shows very gentle wear and remains in very good-plus condition. Great gift idea for anybody interested in music or musical instruments! (Inventory: 1473J) Track Page Views WithAuctiva's FREE Counter
