Vanity Fair brought Thackeray his fame and is a panoramic portrait of English society. His earliest works were written under pseudonyms such as Charles James Yellowplush, Michael Angelo Titmarsh and George Savage Fitz-Boodle. His parodies and satire tended towards attacks on high society, military prowess, the institution of marriage and hypocrisy. During the Victorian era Thackeray was ranked second only to Charles Dickens. CONDITION In uniform half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, generally smart with slight rubbing to spines and extremities. Small loss to spine of vol I, III, V, VI, XI, XXI, XIV. Rubbing to joints also. Small crack to tail of joint to volume VI. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound, although pages 23-25 disbound to volume IV and therefore lacking plate 'almost perfect happiness'. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot throughout.
