Lustrous chocolate brown. The 1870 Indian cent exists in three type reverses: Shallow N, or Type of 1869; Bold N, or Type of 1870; and Bold N over Shallow N, which are doubled dies. This is due to changing the reverse this year from the Shallow N to Bold N design. A few Shallow N dies were rehubbed with the new design. All three are necessary to complete a set. This is similar to the Morgan dollar reverse design change made between 1878 and 1879 (7 tail feather to 8 tail feather).
