In a half calf binding with marbled boards and ornate gilt decoration to the spine. An ink inscription to the back of the front free end paper records that H. Wilfrid Wait received this volume as a Grammar Prize at Ascham School in Bournemouth, dated 1877. 19 illustrations. 1 map and 1 folding map. Collated complete. The intricate folding map depicts Damascus, Hauran and the Lebanon mountains from a personal survey by the author, and the illustrations are woodcut engravings of the author's drawings. Josias Leslie Porter (1823–89) was an Irish Presbyterian minister, missionary, traveller and author. He was posted to Syria as a missionary, arriving there in December 1849, and remained there for a decade during which time he travelled extensively there and in Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. CONDITION In a half calf binding. Externally smart with some rubbing to the spine and extremities, and bumping to the boards. Marbling is still bright to the front and rear boards and to the fore edge. Internally, binding is slightly strained. Pages bright and clean, with just some spotting to the first and last pages. A small closed tear to the folding map.
