Description: You'll be hard pressed to find a better copy of this August 1871 complete number of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine (American Edition). See photo #2 for complete contents. 144 pages. Some highlights I find include: Novelist R.D. Blackmore opens this issue with the first part (of 12 monthly installments) of his new serial novel The Maid of Sker. It was first published by Blackwood's in the following year. It's almost impossible to find today in its three volume first edition book form. Blackmore thought it to be his best novel. Irish author Charles Lever contributes Part 38 (of 42 monthly installments) of his popular serialized "Cornelius O'Dowd." Scottish judge Charles, Lord Neaves pens a review of the youthful W.J. Courthope's The Paradise of Birds: an Old Extravaganza in a Modern Dress. Novelist, British Army officer, and war correspondent Laurence Lockhart's serial novel Fair to See, Part 8 (of 11 monthly installments). The energetic Margaret Oliphant pens the second essay (27 pages) in her Blackwood's featured series of "Great Poets," this on the life and works of novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott. Some author identifications above are drawn from the Wellesley Index, I, 135.
