Description: I have here for sale a book entitled SCRAMBLES AMONGST THE ALPS IN THE YEARS 1860-69 by Edward Whymper. It is a second edition published in 1871 by John Murray, London. There are 90 of the 92 b/w plates (13 & 21 are missing) and all 5 maps are also missing. Whymper today is still recognised as one of the best authorities on mountaineering. He was not only an English mountaineer and explorer, but an illustrator, and author, best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Four members of his climbing party were killed during the descent. Whymper also made important first ascents on the Mont Blanc massif and in the Pennine Alps, Chimborazo in South America, and the Canadian Rockies. His exploration of Greenland contributed an important advance to Arctic exploration. Whymper wrote several books on mountaineering, this one being his most well-known. Dark green cloth hardboards with gilt decoration and lettering to the spine. Chipped and torn to head and tail. Wear to corners. Chamfered board edges. Rear free endpaper is missing so the rear board and spine covering are detached from the binding block. Front hinge is cracked so front board feels loose. Front free endpaper is loose too. Binding block is split between pages 112 and 113 and pulling in several places. Pages sunned. Condition: poor/fair. 432 pages, 23 x 17 cm.
