Description: Lake Erie Maps & Prints An Authentic Antique Map: Not a Modern Reproduction! We Gladly Combine Multiple Items to Save on Shipping Description: It is an authentic antique print approximately 150 years old from Alfred T. Andreas' Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Iowa (Chicago, 1875), a copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The print is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pics. Alfred Theodore Andreas, (1839-1900) was from a wealthy merchant class family in New York. He headed west at 18 and lived a short period in Dubuque Iowa doing clerical work and teaching before entering the Civil War as a Quartermaster, obtaining the rank of Captain under Sherman. He returned to the area after the war and married his sweetheart Sophia Lyter and began to work for some of his army associates, Louis H. Everts and the Thompson Brothers who were creating large maps of Illinois counties. From them he learned the ropes of the buisness and got the idea of producing more specific county township atlases that focused on small communities that included portrait pages, farm views, and advertisement revenue, as well as subscriptions. He formed a partnership with his father-in-land and they formed Andreas, Lyter & Company and began by producing Illinois county township atlases, which were printed in Davenport, IA. The business grew fast and in 1873, it moved to Chicago and set up as the "Adreas Atlas Company" in the Lakeside building, which was designed specifically for publishing. Chicago was beginning to rival New York as the center of the publishing center of the US and the map and atlas industry was flourishing. In Chicago, he produced his first state atlas of Minnesota in 1874 and then the llustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Iowa in 1875, from which this print comes. He went on to produce atlases of Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska, as well as dozens of county & township atlases. His company employed over 300 people that canvassed counties and states collecting locations and "subscriber names" as well as employing illustrators, publishers and printers. Andreas is often credited with the first "illustrated" format for county and state atlases that was soon adopted by other atlas publishers in the Midwest and New England. Size: The image measures approximately 13 by 16 inches on a 14 by 17 1/2" page (37x45cm) Condition: Very Good for its age, an original antique print on strong paper.
