Description: A Report on the Invertebrate Cretaceous and Tertiary Fossils of the Upper Missouri Country Report of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories, Volume IX by F. B. Meek, under the direction of F. V. Hayden, U. S. Geologist-in-Charge, Washington: Government Printing Office, 1876 First edition, quarto, lxiv, 629 pp., profusely illustrated with 85 in-text figures and 45 full-page lithographed plates of fossils, each with an accompanying explanatory text sheet. In original maroon cloth with gilt lettered spine title. From the introduction: “The fossils described and illustrated in this report are from the Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks of the Upper Missouri country, lying between the British possessions on the north, the north branch of Platte River on the south, the Missouri on the east, and the Rocky Mountains on the west.” Meek’s work contributed greatly to unraveling the stratigraphy of the northern Great Plains began by various investigators dating as far back as the Lewis and Clark expedition. The exquisitely drawn plates are characteristic of the high standards set by the Hayden survey, and provide a combination of art and science rarely found in modern paleontological publications. A massive work written by one of North America’s foremost 19th century invertebrate paleontologists. Condition: Edge wear to boards with chipping and some loss at spine ends. Binding badly shaken with splitting to hinges and torn spine covering at top. The text block is weakly held to the covers. Spine gilt is faded but still readable. There is some light scattered foxing to pages and plates at the front and rear of the volume, else text and plates are quite clean.
