Pocket folds. 5cm closed tear to fore edge of both leaves in the central fold, extending into the list by approx. 4cm. Some light overall creasing, including corners. Minor age-toning and light scattered foxing. It is the saloon passenger list for the voyage of the R.M.S. Abyssinia from New York to London voyage, which departed on June 18, 1879, and which includes photography pioneer George Eastman amongst the hundred or so names mentioned. In 1879, London was the centre of the photographic and business world. Then still a young man, George Eastman travelled there to obtain a patent on his plate-coating machine. An American patent was granted the following year. Also mentioned in the list is American scientist Prof. Eli Blake, and we conclude that the pair were probably travelling together on this venture.Provenance: found by us in a shipping trunk, transported to Liverpool in the mid-19th century, belonging to a member of the De Wolf / Meredith families - a wealthy Anglo-American ship owning dynasty - a branch of which emigrated back to England in around 1850. key words:
