Description: Here's a scarce black composite pitch target ball from the 1879-1880s. It is called a "target ball" by collectors because it was used as a target by throwing it into the air. Although this ball is empty, originally it was filled with feathers which flew out into the air when hit by a shotgun pellet showing the spectators that it was a successful hit. No embossing that I can see, but it probably had C.T.H. & 1879 patent date, but it is worn off....Hand pressed in a 3 part mold....crude & rough sheared opening.....black composite pitch material....3"tall......Broken in pieces and reglued back together, so there are cracks around the ball and a couple small holes...FREE SHIPPING...
