Description: Map Showing Geographical Divisions of the U. S. Geological Survey by Clarence King, Director, U. S. Geological Survey, 1880 Original color lithograph, folded as issued. Size: 19 1/2 x 28 inches (borders) on larger sheet. Scale: not given. Julius Bien, Lith, N.Y. From: First Annual Report of the United States Geological Survey published in 1880. As shown on the map, Clarence King’s organizational vision for the new agency (created in 1879) consisted of 8 geographical divisions with colored areas indicating divisions already organized at the time of his first annual report. This map was published with some, but not all, copies of his first report, of which 3 formats in octavo and quarto sizes with differing pagination (panel size of this example indicates that it came from a quarto volume) are known. King is credited with providing the USGS, formed only the year before, with a sound organizational framework that would guide the survey to eventual world renown. Of special note, this map was the first of any type published by the nascent Survey. Condition: Folded with creases as issued. Splits along fold lines have been repaired on back with 3M conservation quality tape.
